Fishing Report: December 2011

December 2011: After our late summer break we are now open for business as usual and we look forward to seeing you on the water at Boringwheel Fishery once more.

Fishing Report: Spring / Summer 2011

We are seeing copious buzzer hatches and plenty of mid-large size rainbows and browns are showing in the returns book. New additions to the venue this year include a shelter for the boats to help them stay dry in wet weather and reduce the need for bailing. Notable catches so far include Mr Brennan (5lb 12oz rainbow), Mr Harris (5lb 8oz rainbow), Mr Walkman (5lb 7oz rainbow), and too many 4lb+ fish to mention.

Members should please remember to renew their annual membership using the forms in the signing in hut or on this page (see above).

Fishing Report: Winter 2010 / 2011

Freezing weather caused a few icy sessions this winter but the many hardy souls who braved the water on milder days were well rewarded with some excellent sport. Be aware that after spells of extreme cold the water may be frozen, but it's also possible to find clear fishable sections of bank near the inlet stream that are possible to reach quite early into any thaw. Good sport was available to all who made the effort with 100% full bags on New Year's Day despite the ice.

Notable catches included Mr J Swan who landed a 6lb rainbow, Mr S Davidson (5lb brown on a gold head viva), Mr I Southcott (4lb 2oz brown), Mr R Huntley (4lb 5oz rainbow), and Mr M Clemens (5 1/2lb rainbow); in addition many 3lb+ browns were showing in the water.

Fishing Report: September/October 2010

Lots of action this autumn as the temperatures cooled and the fishing really came good after the long hot summer. Mild weather this year definitely helped the fly life and vigorous hatches continued late into the season.

Notable catches included Mr R Fry with a 5 1/2lb rainbow, Mr R Dent with a 4 1/2lb fish, Andy Weston with a 5lb rainbow and Jon Stewart with a 4lb+ brownie. Five year old George Rhodes from Brighton also caught his very first trout, a 3lb+ rainbow - so well done George!

Fishing Report: July/August 2010

High summer is here so please be aware that on hotter days things can sometimes be a little slow as high temperatures decrease the saturated oxygen in the water. The waters are stocked as normal however, so there are plenty of fish in front of you!

Due to the warm weather there is no time limit on two fish tickets this month. Some compensations include the picturesque water lillies and the wildlife - including our resident grass snake.

Fishing Report: May/June 2010

Boringwheel looks beautiful at this time of year and the summer foliage is starting to show in earnest. Fish are responding well to a wide variety of flies and are feeding heavily at the surface - so why not try a popper or dry fly if you see fish moving in front of you?

As usual anything black works fantastically as it casts an attractive outline in the water. Short dressed black wet flies with a heavy body, like a weighted dark hair's ear nymph, are always effective when fished with a jerky retrieve.

Remember that if you want to pay a member's discount when fishing you need to renew your annual membership. Forms are available from this web site or in the fishing office.

There are lots of 3lb plus fully finned hard fighting rainbows and browns in the water. Notable catches this month include Mr M Abbott (4lb 10oz rainbow), Mr A Bennett (4lb 2oz rainbow on a woolly bugger), Member 1056 (3lb 8oz brown), Mr C Warrington (3lb 14oz rainbow) and Mr J Stewart (4lb 8oz rainbow to a black hair's ear).

Fishing Report: March / April 2010

Spring is starting to show after a long hard winter and the daffodils and crocuses are at last in bloom. Floating line tactics continue to do well and we've hardly seen any boobies or other winter flies in the returns book over the winter months. Notable catches include: Mr J North (8lb 7oz rainbow), Mr Stewart (5lb brown and 5lb rainbow in consecutive casts), Mr Wood (5lb+ rainbow), Mr Boisvert (3lb+ brown, one of many in the returns book) and Mr Wright who caught the biggest fish on a buzzer so far this year - a 4lb+ rainbow.

Fishing Report: Winter 2009 / 2010

Winter is a great time to fish Boringwheel as the low temperatures mean clearer water and less weed, plus a high level of dissolved oxygen so the trout have extra energy and are extremely hard fighting. Almost all anglers bagged up and the fish responded very well to a wide variety of tactics. Anything black in the fly box seems to do well in winter here.

Plenty of large fish made their presence known and almost all visitors were able to bag up without too much difficulty. Notable catches included: Roy Smith (7lb 3oz rainbow), Mr S Fuller (6lb 4oz rainbow), "JR" (6lb 1oz rainbow), Jack London (5lb 6oz rainbow), Mick and Jordan Excell (6lb 3oz rainbow), Mr R Payne (6lb rainbow). Richard Sayers, Mr C Tucker, Mr D Dimmox, Mr Bryant, Mr Taylor and Mr R Pointer all took rainbows well over 5lb in size and there were too many 4lb plus fish to mention, with bigger 4lb+ fish going to Rich Day (4lb 12oz rainbow) Mr M Stephen (4lb 11oz rainbow). Congratulations to Member 105 who took a beautiful 4lb 10oz brown on a cat's whisker this month.

Boringwheel fishing reports for: Jan - Sep 2009

The mild weather we enjoyed in Autumn was very encouraging, and the lack of wind and rain allowed the water to remain relatively clear. Daddy long legs were effective this Autumn, particularly in the humid and overcast conditions of the first few weeks of September. There were plenty of 2lb+ and 3lb+ well conditioned trout showing, and fish remained active throughout the top layers.

September: Notable catches included Mr R Plumbley with a rainbow of 5lb 4oz on a white daddy, Mr D Thomas who caught two fish of 4lb 1oz each, Mr Barratt and Mr Duff who also landed 4lb rainbows.

August: Mr Barry Mitchell with a rainbow of 5lb 1oz and Mr Roy Turner with one of 4lb 8oz. Congratulations to the angler who landed fish using a "Salty Sea Dog" pattern, that's a new one on me and the first time we've seen such a fly in the returns book.

July: Mr T Godden with a 6lb 2oz brown trout, Jeff Goggin who landed a 5lb rainbow on a damsel, Mr Boisvert and Mr Roberts who each took browns at 4lb plus, plus Mr Donovan who took two full bags on his birthday catching five fish for a total weight of over 14lb.

June: Mr D Bishop with a 7lb 15oz rainbow, Member 104 with a 7lb 6oz rainbow on a minkie, Mr B Laker with a 7lb rainbow, and Mr A Farmer with a 5lb 6oz brown.

May: Chris Harris with a 6lb brown trout and a 7 1/2 lb rainbow in the same session, Barry Mitchell with a 6lb 4oz brown trout on a dry fly, Mr R Hazlewood with a 6lb 12oz brownie, John Bennett with a 9lb 15oz rainbow, "JR" with a 9 1/2 lb rainbow, Mr T Harding with an 8lb 4oz rainbow to a cat's whiskers, Mr R Harding with a 7lb 15oz rainbow, Mr T Flenley and Mr M Flenley who landed a 6lb 9oz brown and a 4lb 7oz brown respectively on a montana fly, Mr P H Sheffield and Mr M Sheffield who each landed 5lb+ browns in the same session (to a white damsel and a black spider), Mr S Fittall with a 6lb brown on a nomad, Alexander Parrett with a 6lb 7oz brown, Mr B Mitchell with a 5lb 8oz rainbow to a dry fly - and way too many 4lb+ rainbows and browns to mention here. Tight lines!

April: Mr G Poole (7lb 6oz rainbow to a black buzzer), Mr D Barratt (7lb 2oz rainbow), Mr R Reynolds (7lb rainbow to a diawl bach), Mr J Norton (6 1/2lb rainbow to a goldhead nymph), Roy Simpson (6lb 2oz rainbow to a damsel), Des Watson (5lb 13oz rainbow to a damsel), Mr A Cochrane (5lb 8oz brown), Mr P Wickham (5 1/2lb rainbow to a whickham's fancy - of course!), Mr G Dulley (5lb brown trout to a damsel), Mr Warburton (5lb brown), Mr B Wood (5lb brown to a gold head daddy long legs).

The heaviest catch in the first week of March fell to Mr G Gibson who landed a 6 3/4 rainbow. Clive Wren and Mr J Hardimann scored with 5 3/4lb rainbows, and there were plenty of fish in the 3lb+ range showing. Pat and Keiron Carroll both landed 5lb+ rainbows, as did Mr F Dewar and Barry Mitchell - who fished with a montana, the most successful fly so far this month.

There were some terrific bags in February - even though the weather was so cold that, at times, large sections of the lake were frozen over. Mr R Paybe landed an 8lb 5oz rainbow to a montana, Mr D Wood caught a 7lb 14 oz rainbow to a cat's whisker, Roy Huntley (visiting from Spain) netted a 7lb 6oz rainbow on an orange nymph, and Tim Weedon pulled out a 7b fish to a fritz montana. Keith Gale, John Perkins and Ron Hayden landed fish over 6lb, and the average weight was around 3lb. As usual black flies were successful at this time of year, and there were even fish tempted to small black buzzers and nymphs as the fish came to the feed on mid-day winter midge hatches.

Boringwheel fishing reports for 2008

November / December: The new staging outside the signing in hut and the extensive repairs to the boats (including new oars, repaired oar holders and new bottom boards) have proved very popular and Boringwheel has been very busy this month. At the time of writing, in early December, the water is fishing extremely well and all anglers are bagging up with hard fighting fully finned rainbows.

Notable catches in November included Mr J Smith with a 7 1/2lb rainbow, Mr P Adams with a 6lb 4oz rainbow, and ten other anglers who caught fish well over 5lb.
