Fishing Report: April 2008

Boringwheel is really bursting into life this summer, and April was a bumper month on the water. Floating line tactics are reaping dividends and popular flies include cat's whisker, hair's ear, fritz varieties, and anything black. The average fish size is a shade over 3lbs - with many bigger specimens in the water.

As you turn into the venue you will note our latest development, a remodelled driveway with new surfaces and new gates. Also, as with any other venue, please remember that you require an Environment Agency fishing license to fish at Boringwheel.

Notable catches include Mr P Brown with a 8lb 6oz rainbow, Mr M Mayell with a 6lb 4oz rainbow to a damsel, Mr C Dennis with a 6lb 1oz rainbow, Bob White with a 6lb rainbow to a damsel, Mr M Coleman with a 6lb rainbow to a montana, Mr R Hayden with a 5 1/2lb rainbow, Mr Davies with a 5lb 4oz rainbow to a yellow woolly bugger, and Mo Rippley with a 5lb 4oz rainbow to a black fly. Scores of other fish in the 3lb to 5lb bracket were landed (including seven fish that weighed in at exactly 5lb) and few anglers had trouble bagging up this month.

Fishing Report: March 2008

Boringwheel looks beautiful in the spring and this year is proving to be no exception. Notable catches this month include Mr C Rusted (7lb rainbow to a montana), Mr J Harris (6lb 10oz rainbow), Mr T Adams and Mr G Best (who both landed rainbows of 5lb 8oz using white woolly buggers), Ian Jardine (5lb 5oz rainbow to a cat's whisker) and Mr K Neale (who landed a 3lb brown trout).

Fishing Report: February 2008

Notable catches this month included Mr G Hawkins (6lb 10oz rainbow), Mick Doe (who captured two fish, each weighing in at 6lb 4oz), Colin Wainwright (5lb 9oz rainbow), Charlie Adams (5lb rainbow), Mr B Saunders (5lb rainbow to a cat's whisker), and Mr J Banford (who landed a 4lb 12oz brown trout on a red diawl bach).

Fishing Report: January 2008

The New Year began with some challenging weather, but notable catches in January included Mr Black, Mr Quin, Mr Butcher and Mr Williams with 4lb fish, Mr Mustkin and Mr Hawkins with 5lb rainbows, and Mr King who landed a 7lb specimen. Damsels and cats whiskers have been popular flies, and when the water is coloured we also recommend something large and black fished slow on the bottom. Very best wishes for 2008 to all our customers from everyone at Boringwheel.

Fishing Report: December 2007

A mild December meant that Boringwheel continued to be busy right through the Christmas and New Year period as anglers took advantage of the clement weather. The fish responded to the warm days and the catch returns were very favourable for this time of year. Average size remains high and plenty of 4lb + rainbows showed.

Notable catches included Mr Benjamin, Mr Townsend, Mr Carroll, Mr Falmer, Mr Hicks and Mr Smith who all banked well contitioned 4lb fish. Mr Buckland landed a 4lb 12oz rainbow on a daddy long legs, Mr Anderson and Mr Hardiman both caught 5 1/2lb rainbows, and Mr Poffrey landed a superb 10lb rainbow on a traditional butcher fly.

Fishing Report: November 2007

Mild weather is bringing lots of anglers to the venue, and the sport remains extremely good. As in October, almost every angler has bagged up with hard fighting fully finned rainbows and the average fish size remains high at around 3lb. Fish are coming readily to floating line tactics, and the best performing flies continue to be the three most consistently popular patterns: goldhead fritz variants, montanas and goldhead cats whiskers. A good tip for this time of year, should the water be clouded by wind and rain, is to try a large black fly on a slow retrieve as it will cast a stronger silhouette.

Fishing Report: October 2007

Another busy month at Boringwheel, and one that saw almost every angler bagging up with hard fighting, fin perfect rainbows and browns. Average fish size was consistently good at a little over 3lb, and the best performing flies were goldhead variants, fritz, montanas and cats whiskers.

Notable catches include: Mr A Purcell (7lb 4oz rainbow to a dark hair's ear), Mr T Arnold (7lb rainbow), Mr P Cannon (6lb 12oz rainbow to a "secret fly"), Mr P Brown (5lb 8oz rainbow to a booby), Mr L Benjamin (5lb 4oz rainbow), Mr I Sinclair (4lb rainbow) .

Fishing Report: September 2007

Lack of rain and moderate temperatures kept the trout feeding well in relatively clear water. September saw plenty of action on floating lines using fry imitations and late-season dry flies like daddy longlegs. Best flies were damsels, cats whiskers, montana and daddies. The average size fish is still over 3lb, with lots of 4lb fish showing this month.

Notable catches include: Mr P Payne (6lb8oz rainbow on a montana), Mr D Hinkes (6lb 8oz rainbow), Mr A Chase (5lb 4oz rainbow), Mr B Saunders (4lb 5oz rainbow to a daddy long legs), Mr A Bolingbroke (4lb rainbow).

Fishing Report: August 2007

Notable catches in August included Mr T Ballard (7lb 4oz rainbow to a black cat's whisker), Mr P Groundsell (5lb 10oz rainbow to a black and green nymph), Mr G Brooker, Mr Jonathan Salt and Mr I Tonks (who all caught 5lb+ rainbows).

Fishing Report: July 2007

Plenty of sport on top of the water to floating lines. Notable catches this month include Mr T Dryland (10lb 10oz rainbow), Mr Bolingbrooke (8 1/2lb rainbow), Mr M V Dearson (8lb rainbow), Mr B Revs (6lb 6oz rainbow), Mr M Buck (5 3/4lb rainbow), Alex Gay (5lb 7oz rainbow), and Dave Pallen (5lb 6oz rainbow). Average fish size is still over 3lb and many anglers have landed 4lb+ fish, including Mr B Mills who caught a 4lb brown trout on a hair's ear. Congrulations also go to Jonathan Knight who landed his first ever rainbow of 2 1/2lbs.

Fishing Report: June 2007

Lots of rain this month but that hasn't kept the fishermen away, and the trout have responded to the cool weather to give some great sport. Floating line tactics using lures, damsels and even dry flies have landed a lot of fish and most anglers have successfully bagged up, even on the wettest of days.

Notable catches include: Mr Wheeler (7 1/4lb brown trout), Mr A Cox (7lb 4oz brown), Mr D Williams (7 1/4lb rainbow), Mr J Ornell (6 1/2lb rainbow), Mr D Orchin (5lb 14oz rainbow to a montana), Mr G Bede (5 1/2lb rainbow) , Mr A Fawthrop (5lb 8oz rainbow) and Mr R Hoggs (5lb rainbow to a damsel. Several other anglers caught 4lb+ fish, including Mr French who landed a 4 3/4lb brown and Mr Austen who netted a 4lb 4oz brown.

Fishing Report: May 2007

A number of browns have shown this month: including a 9lb 4oz brown for Mr N Kierk, a 6lb 3oz brown on a buzzer to Mr J Saunders and a 4lb 3oz brown on a dry fly to Mr a Reeves.

Average fish size remains high, and the following anglers were among those who caught hard fighting rainbows of over 4lb: Mr Probert, Mr Gore, Mr Hunter, Mr Springer, Jeff Goggin, Charles Dujardin and Mr M Watson. The fish are high in the water and lots of anglers are having success with dry flies and subsurface nymphs.

Fishing Report: April 2007

April has been a bumper month at Boringwheel and the fish have really responded to the mild spring weather. The trout are currently averaging well over 3lb in size, and anglers are having fantastic top of the water sport with hard-fighting full tailed rainbows and browns in excellent condition.

Huge numbers of fish over 4lb and 5lb showed this month, and notable catches included: Ian Kettley with an 11lb 5oz rainbow on a cat's whisker, Sam Inman with a 7lb 10oz brown, M Watson's four fish bag for over 18lb (with two rainbows of 6lb & 4lb and two browns of 6lb & 3lb), George Hawkins 6lb 10oz rainbow, and a first time visit from L Dennis that yielded two 5lb+ rainbows for a brace of over 10lb. Commiserations are also due to Mr B Bailey who lost what he describes as "a monster brown".

Fishing Report: March 2007

Boringwheel really comes into it's own in Spring and this year the water is looking as pretty as ever. With an average weight over 3lb and lots of fish showing in the 4lb to 5lb range most visitors managed to bag up with good-sized hard-fighting full-tailed rainbows. Anglers using cats whiskers lures or dark coloured nymphs like the montana fished slow on floating lines found success. There are lots of invertibrates in the water, so whether you're casting from boat or bank remember to follow the wind and you will find feeding fish.

Notable catches this month included Mr G Booker's 13lb 15oz rainbow (cat's whisker), Malcolm Simmons' 9lb 10oz rainbow (minkie), Fred Purfred's 8lb+ rainbow (GRHE), Mr K Collins' fish of 7lb and Sid Murrell's 5lb 8oz rainbow (montana).

Fishing Report: February 2007

Boringwheel continued to be very productive in February. Notable catched included Mr O'Brian, Mr Smith and Mr Salt who all landed fish over 5lb, and Mr Hansons' party who caught 32 fish to 5lb. The biggest single fish went to Mr South who landed an 8lb 11oz rainbow on a green fritz.

Fishing Report: January 2007

Boringwheel was heavily stocked in the first weeks of the New Year with hard fighting 3lb+ rainbows and January saw lots of anglers bagging up with extremely good quality fish. Jon Stewart caught a 4lb 5oz rainbow on a black GRHE, M K Wood landed a fish of 4lb 7oz, Mr B Butcher caught a 4lb fish and Mr J Muchmore landed a 3lb 9oz brown on a damsel nymph.

Effective flies included cats whiskers, fritz lures and nymph patterns like PTN or diawl bach. On milder days the water looked very attractive with lots of fish moving near the surface as they fed on fry and and the prolific hatches of small buzzers.

Boringwheel fishing reports for 2006

November /December: Charles Cooper landed a 7lb 2oz rainbow on a green fritz and Mr M Perkins caught a 9lb 2oz rainbow using a white fritz. Lots of fish over 4lb showed, and Gary Brooker landed rainbows of 4lb, 4lb 10oz and 6lb 6oz over the course of two visits.

July / August: As with all small stillwaters fishing can be difficult during prolonged periods of hot weather like the one we experienced in July and August. Trout go off the feed when the water temperature exceeds 22 Celsius, so early mornings or late evenings good times to fish in the height of summer. (For those who insisted on fishing during the heat of the day there was free sun lotion available in the lodge!)

Even during the hottest weather this summer we had several notable catches including: Mr S Lacy (6lb rainbow), Mr S Card (7lb 9oz rainbow), Mr A Perkins (7lb 14oz rainbow), and Mr G Lillywhite who landed rainbows of 5lb 8oz and 7lb 1oz in a three fish bag that came in at over 14lbs.

Sam Green and Mr J Bere came second and third with bag weights of 11lb 1oz and 11lb using floating lines and cat's whiskers. Jon represented Boringwheel at the national final at Grafham Water on 15th May 2006, where he blanked!

January / February: Cooler water temperatures have helped boost catches and the fishery consistently produced limit bags with rainbows to 12lb.

Notable catches: Tony Watts (11lb 4oz rainbow on cat's whisker), Vic Rice (8 1/2 lb rainbow on a goldhead lime montana), Mike Styles (6 1/2 lb rainbow), Mr B Chaffon (6 1/2 lb rainbow), B Dance (10lb 8oz rainbow), N Cullen (12lb 1oz rainbow) and L Brown (12lb 12oz rainbow).
